Pondering many things these days. I'm currently obsessed with the intersections of Sherlock in many venues, Doctor Who, books, I love, and the astronomy in them. Oh, and Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm also preparing for an online class with my husband and my poet friend on Astronomy and Literature, called Messages in the Stars through CosmoQuest.
http://cosmoquest.org/x/cosmoacademy/2014/08/15/messages-in-the-stars/

I'd love to see you in the class! It's limited to 8 students so it will be a great discussion based class. We promise to talk about BBC Sherlock, Tolkien such as the Silmarillion, Dr. Who, Homer, Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, proto- Indo-European languages, and many more.

We hope to run it as an in person class at some point locally too. :) and definitely as panels at Phoenix Comicon.

I've been thinking lately about movie quotes that I use in everyday conversation. Here's some of mine:

1. "[He/She/I] chose poorly" - Grail Knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - I use it particularly at the grocery store when I get in the wrong line.

2. "Have fun storming the castle!" - Princess Bride - often used when leaving a group who are going off to do something else

What are yours? (or even book, music, or TV show quotes)

There's more of the amazing elisem jewelry on sale - including hair stuff! (fills me with love - I have one on the way now) There's some amazing things and just hilarious names for her stuff (so even if you don't have the cash, but love fantasy and such, go look and imagine the stories).

My favorite names this time are:
"When an Impressionist and a Geologist Love Each Other Very Much..."
(particularly being in a department with geologists now)

"What Cats Can Do to Time"

Look up the date of your birthday in Wikipedia. From the date page, pick three interesting historical events that occurred on that date, two births, and one death.
(of course, being the history nut I am, I couldn't stick with just those numbers)

Events:
1494 - Christopher Columbus first sights land that will be called Jamaica.

1715 - "Edmund Halley's" total solar eclipse (the last one visible in London, United Kingdom for almost 900 years).

1960 - The Anne Frank House opens in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. (amazing to finally see it a few years ago!)

1978 - The first unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail (which would later become known as "spam") is sent by a Digital Equipment Corporation marketing representative to every ARPANET address on the west coast of the United States. (the year of my birth brought spam...)

Births:
1892 - George Paget Thomson, English physicist, Nobel Prize laureate (d. 1975)
1898 - Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel (d. 1978)
1903 - Bing Crosby, American singer and actor (d. 1977)

Death:
1779 - John Winthrop, American astronomer (b. 1714) (he was a founder of seismology!)
2007 - Wally Schirra, American astronaut (b. 1923) (*sniff*)

Tonight at my church meeting we talked about the Beatitude (this year's all about the Beatitudes), "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

It was a very powerful meeting, particularly the part where we all shared what we mourn. There was also comforting going on as well - people giving hugs, people thanking others for having given well-timed hugs, some laughter, and comforting words.

On the way home, I needed music - particularly those songs that let me mourn. It seemed a fitting ending to the evening. I also realized that music is a BIG comfort to me and a release of emotions.

What songs let you mourn or what songs comfort you when you mourn? Is music something that comforts you?

Here's what I listened to on the way home:

Evanescence - Bring Me to Life and My Immortal
Brandi Carlile - Turpentine, Tragedy, and Hallelujah

As for songs that comfort, I love to listen to "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" by Simon and Garfunkle.

I found out today that the movements of the planets *do* affect my life.

My coworker and I were talking to one of the IT guys about our old Mac computers at work. He said that he would like to update them all and put Leopard on them. My coworker was pressing him for a timescale of the work:

Coworker: When could you get the upgrade done?
IT guy: Sometime. Just not now. We're too busy now.
Coworker: What kind of timescale are we talking about? Six months?
IT guy: Oh no, when [Mars] is at conjunction would be good.

I had to stop and realize that he did mean that. Our facility controls cameras on Mars - conjunction is the slow time around here.

Of course, Mercury's retrograde motion doesn't negatively affect electronics (like Hubble)... even though MSNBC says so.

Yay!

Hi all (particularly the authors/teachers out there)!

A friend of mine homeschools her daughters (ages 4, ~7, and 10) and she was looking for resources for teaching the older two about novels. She was thinking that looking online for "book club" style questions about certain books might be an economical way to do it.

I found http://www.book-clubs-resource.com but was wondering if y'all had anything to send send along (or might know someone who would).

Thanks!

(I got the reminder to post that link after reading [livejournal.com profile] janni's post:

I hope it presents a better view for new writers than the other release.
